Indulgence = ? (By Catherine Mann)

Indulgence = ?
By Catherine Mann

I feel like I should post one word here and I could be done with my blog entry for this month, but that wouldn't be fair. Would it? But if I did have to condense my thoughts on a treasured indulgence, it would go something like this:

INDULGENCE=STARBUCKS

Beyond just the joy of saying the words.... Venti Peppermint Mocha Latte, Skim Milk, No Whip... sometimes decaf.... (Okay, I know there's whip in the photo, but I figure calories don't count since we're on the internet!)

There's the camaraderie that comes with a trip to Starbucks, curling up in one of those comfy chairs and sipping a latte or coffee while I talk with one of my writer buddies for hours on end....

Writer Buddy=Joanne Rock

Writer Buddy=Stephanie Newton

Now that I think about it, the true indulgence is the blessing of friendship. And on that note, I believe I'm going indulge myself in a long phone call with one of my treasured writer buddies!

What's your favorite coffee shop special? Your favorite place to gab with friends? Post a comment and you'll be entered to win an autographed copy of my March USA Today bestseller, HIS HEIR, HER HONOR. (One winner chosen at random tomorrow - so check back!)

  1. I drink green tea rather than coffee now because it's supposed to be good for you. But, Catherine, with 2 million book sales in 20 different countries? I want to be you when I grow up. Hmm, maybe I out to start going to Starbucks!

  2. I never do the coffee shop thing, mainly because the nearest one is 25 miles from my house. But if I did hang out there, I'd be drinking unsweetened Darjeeling. Doesn't sound terribly indulgent, does it?

  3. Starbucks=book sales? Here I come and make me the most fattening, whipped thingamabob you got on the menu!
    And make a reservation for this afternoon. I'll be back for another one!

  4. I have never been a coffee drinker. I have been to Starbucks twice in my life, first for OJ then for hot cocoa. I do drink Earl Grey tea so that is what I would order if I went to a coffee shop again. When I want to indulge I go to my favorite frozen custard shop. All of the calories but none of the caffiene. LOL

  6. Mmmmmmm.... I need a mocha frappuccino now. Except it's snowing outside so frosty beverages sort of lose their appeal. But I prefer my coffee cold. My tea hot. Yeah, I know that's backwards. :-)

  7. Terry, I adore tea too! Especially like iced tea - but for hot teas, I enjoy peach tea or chocolate mint tea. Yum!

  8. Cheryl, I think it sounds delightfully indulgent - especially if there's good company along!!

  9. Carolyn, I like how you think! Certainly I've brainstormed plenty of books with my pals while sipping a Starbucks latte!

  10. Stacie, you had me at hot cocoa! W/peppermint and whipped cream at Christmas time (calories don't count during holidays! LOL!)

  13. I'm not much of a coffee drinker, but I love Starbucks! It's relaxing, social time the minute I walk in, and I always run into people I know.

  14. Carmel Machiatto-- you got me hooked on that one, Cathy! Although if it's after my three cup quota, I rein it in and order the Vanilla Red Team. Yum!

  15. Starbuck's with a friend. There is nothing better...except maybe Starbuck's with a friend in your jammies! Since it is not considered appropriate for a woman of my age and stature to be seen in public in her jammies (yes I know some gals do it) the next best thing is Starbuck's to go or made at home. My serious, no frills drink=fat free latte. My indulgence=mocha latte, no whip, skim milk. YUM!

  16. Indulgence? For me, yes. Does not hurt to have Starbucks Coffee once in a while. Lucky me, the hospital I work for has Starbucks! :)

  17. I drink usually drink regular coffee with cream, but the last time I was at Starbucks to meet with my critique partner, I had a Hot Cocoa Cappuccino. Dang, was it good.

  18. Hi Catherine - Starbucks sells my favorite Earl Grey Tea, so I'm good whenever I go there with my coffee-drinking friends. ;)

    You seriously are THE Woman...20 million in book sales in 20 different countries?!? I agree with Terry, I want to be you when I grow up. ;)

    Congratulations! I'm really looking forward to reading Cover Me!

  19. Venti Caramel Frappucino. Oh.My.Goodness. My favorite Starbucks drink. EVER! My favorite thing to do at Starbucks? Sit in a big comfy chair with my Kindle and my drink and let the hours slip away.

  20. This discussion leaves me with bittersweet memories. My favorite Starbucks just closed after 10+ years. I was there the day it opened and the day it closed. Lots of fun times were had there. My husband even played guitar on Fridays in the early years. There is one near work that I stop at every morning to order my Venti Chai, 8 pump, no water, non-fat, but it's just not the same. Miss you Springhurst Starbucks.

  22. Coffee shops can be great fun, but my favorite is to share a pot of Jasmine tea at home with a friend and lounging in a sprawl in front of the fire in winter.

  28. Tamara - Hot cocoa is a fav of mine anytime! I don't drink a lot of regular coffee, but if I do it's loaded with milk. :)

  29. C.H. - I do so loooove tea - wouldn't it be fun to have a Sourcebooks authors tea party? With all the fun cakes and little sandwiches that go with it... our local tea room closed down. I was SO sad. It was my favorite place to eat out!!

  35. Hi Anita - Apple Cider - another awesome fall fav of mine. :)

  36. Wow - 20 different countries? I'm impressed! I bet seeing all the different covers for your books is fun. As for indulgence, I totally agree with the importance of firendships. I got a pedicure with a girlfriend today. The pedicure was ok, but what was really fun was just talking with my friend. Friendship = true indulgence!

  37. Amanda, yes, it is great fun when the foreign editions show up in the mail - the ones from Japan are especially interesting. I'm collecting up my extra copies of those to send over to Japan once they're ready to rebuild and/or perhaps have shelters where reading material would be welcome.
